Aquaponics is an integrated production system that takes into account two fundamental elements: Aquaculture (breeding of animals living in water) and Hydroponics (above-ground cultivation of plants in water).
This system is known and useful for a sustainable improvement of agricultural production and increased incomes by those involved in the agricultural sector. So how important is this system to NSF? NSF's mission is to end hunger and malnutrition around the world by putting the available resources at the service of the population for their food empowerment, by limiting the risks associated with food insecurity.
NSF recently created the Self-Sufficiency Committee, which is responsible, among other things, for the implementation of the aquaponics component.
By promoting aquaponics, NSF wants to demonstrate that this innovative agricultural mode allows:
- To avoid land management conflicts related to farming.
- To increase the efficiency of agricultural productivity, thus producing little at a lower cost and with little space
- Avoid the use of pesticides and insecticides.
- To guarantee the safety of crops without the addition of chemicals, thus to grow profitably with a reduced ecological footprint.
- Improving the accessibility of agriculture to poorer individuals who do not have access to land
- To produce a large amount of nutritious food with only 10% of the water demand since the same water is recycled, in a closed circuit.
NSF has chosen to prioritize this mode of cultivation in its projects. Three projects are under development.
